In 1987, approximately 17 million homeless dogs and cats were destroyed in shelters and pounds in the U.S. In 1998 fewer than 5 million were being killed. Although, according to the National Council, it is widely accepted when 9.6 million animals are euthanized in the United States annually. It is clear, based on these statistics, that premature euthanization of domestic animals has been significantly reduced. It is plausible that many of these animals did not "have to" die, it was just the only option left. Perhaps due in part to the lack of an organization such as Seven Blessings.
A Pet is 'Orphaned':
- By death or illness of it's owner.
- When a move to a new location occurs that will not allow the pet.
- When the arrival of a new born forces stress on pet AND owner.
- An unexpected loss of income occurs and the pet cannot be care for effectively.
